Over 100 Pride Pins on the Trail!
This summer, The Pin Prick proudly sponsored over 100 pride pins for Pink Summits’ Pride Hike in the Austrian Alps. These small but powerful pride accessories travelled with hikers from across Europe, pinned to backpacks and jackets, as a symbol of visibility and solidarity.
For three days, participants embarked on hiking and mountaineering adventures surrounded by stunning alpine landscapes. But this was more than just an outdoor challenge – it was a celebration of community, resilience, and representation.

Why Pride Accessories Matter in Outdoor Spaces
Wearing a pin might seem like a small act, but for LGBTQ+ people in the outdoors it carries huge meaning. A rainbow pin, pride flag accessory, or other subtle marker of identity can spark conversations, signal safety, and make people feel less alone on the trail.
Outdoor sports have often been framed as exclusive spaces – tough, heteronormative, and unwelcoming for those who don’t fit the stereotype of the “traditional adventurer.” Pride accessories, when worn proudly in these environments, disrupt that narrative. They show that queer people climb mountains, hike trails, and love the wilderness just as much as anyone else.

The Importance of Representation in Outdoor Sport
When LGBTQ+ outdoor enthusiats see others like them, whether in person or online, it sends a powerful message: you belong here too. By carrying symbols of identity like LGBTQ+ pride pins into alpine huts and mountain summits, participants at the Pride Hike were asserting that the outdoors is not a gated space. It is for everyone, regardless of sexuality, gender, or background. This kind of representation breaks down barriers and helps create safer, more inclusive outdoor environments.

About Pink Summits
Pink Summits is a non-profit campaign dedicated to making queer visibility a reality in outdoor sports. They bring together LGBTQI+ hikers, climbers, paragliders, and outdoor enthusiasts to share skills, tell their stories, and support one another.
Their message is clear: the outdoors belongs to us all. By combining sport with activism, Pink Summits creates visibility where it is often lacking – high on mountaintops, deep in forests, and in spaces where queer people have historically been erased.
The Pride Hike is just one of many initiatives by Pink Summits. If you’re inspired to join, check out their upcoming activities – whether hiking, climbing, or flying – and become part of a growing network of LGBTQ+ outdoor adventurers.

Other Community Partners
This year’s Pride Hike was supported not only by The Pin Prick, but also by Osprey Europe, who provided outdoor equipment, and Almsterndl Gruttenhütte, who welcomed the community into their mountain hut accommodation. Together, these partners helped make the Pride Hike a memorable and meaningful event.
