What is Polyamory?

Polyamory is a term used to describe a type of consensual non-monogamous relationship or lifestyle. It refers to the practice of having multiple intimate relationships, whether emotional, romantic, or sexual, with the knowledge and consent of all involved parties.

In polyamorous relationships, individuals have the freedom to form connections and engage in multiple simultaneous relationships, with the understanding that all relationships are based on openness, honesty, and respect.

Overall, polyamory recognizes that individuals have the capacity to form multiple loving and meaningful connections, and it provides a framework for ethical and consensual exploration of these relationships.

Ok.. but does Polyamory mean you're "cheating"?

Polyamory is different from cheating or infidelity because all partners involved are aware of and agree to the arrangement. Communication and consent are fundamental aspects of polyamorous relationships, as they prioritize the well-being and autonomy of all individuals involved. This can involve establishing clear boundaries, discussing expectations, and addressing any insecurities or concerns that may arise.

It's important to note that polyamory can take different forms and vary in its specific dynamics. Some people may be part of a closed polyamorous relationship, where all partners involved agree not to pursue additional outside relationships. Others may be part of an open polyamorous relationship, where partners are allowed to explore connections with other individuals.

The specific structure and guidelines of a polyamorous relationship are typically established through open and ongoing communication among all parties involved.

What is the difference between Polyamory and Polysexuality?

Polyamory refers to a relationship structure or lifestyle in which individuals have the capacity for multiple simultaneous romantic or emotional relationships with the knowledge and consent of all parties involved.

Polysexuality, on the other hand, relates to sexual orientation rather than relationship structure. Polysexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by attraction to multiple genders or a willingness to engage in sexual relationships with people of various gender identities. It is often considered a subset of bisexuality or pansexuality. Individuals who identify as polysexual are open to the possibility of developing sexual connections with people of different gender identities or express attraction to multiple genders.

The blue stripe represents openness and honesty among all partners involved in polyamorous relationships.

The red stripe symbolizes love and passion.

The black stripe represents solidarity with those who must hide their polyamorous relationships due to societal norms and prejudices.

The 'pi' symbol is in the center of the flag, as the first letter of 'polyamory' as written in Greek script.

The 'New' 2022 Polyamory Pride Flag

In the summer of 2020, the original polyamory pride flag became widely seen as unfavorable within the community, with many individuals expressing a desire to move away from its garish colors and instead embrace symbols that were easier to understand.

On November 23 2022, Polyamory Day, the PolyamProud committee announced the winning design for a new polyamorous flag. The winning design by Red Howell was chosen through a community vote in which over 30,000 people participated.

The symbolism of the new flag design includes the following elements:

  • White chevron: The chevron flows outward, symbolizing the growth and possibilities within the non-monogamous community. Its asymmetric position represents non-traditional relationships.
  • Gold heart: The heart represents that all forms of love are at the core of non-monogamy. The color gold represents the energy and perseverance of the community.
  • Red stripe: This stripe represents love and attraction.
  • Blue stripe: The blue stripe signifies openness and honesty.
  • Purple stripe: The purple stripe symbolizes a united non-monogamous community.
